They will be here on Mondays 1-5, Wednesdays 1-5, and Saturdays 9-1. Their last day will be April 16. For a complete list of dates and time please visit our website at www.decatur.lib.al.us.

For those needing tax forms, the library does have the basic federal forms in stock. They are in the rack in the hallway. We do at the moment have a few State of Alabama long forms at the Information Desk. We only received a small shipment so we have placed a limit of 1 booklet per person on the state forms. For those with internet access and a printer, federal and state forms may be obtained online. The federal forms can be found at www.irs.gov/ and the state forms can be found at http://www.ador.state.al.us/incometax/ITformsindex.htm.

Please be advised that the staff of the library will be able to help you find a form if you know the number of the form. However, the staff cannot advise you on what form to file or answer any questions regarding your taxes.

2nd Annual Love Your Library 5K and Running Readers Mile

Please join us for the 2nd annual Friends of the Decatur Public Library Love Your Library 5K and Running Readers Mile on Saturday, February 25, 2012. Beginning Monday, October 3, our hours will be changing. We will no longer be open until 9pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Our new hours are Monday 9am-8pm, Tuesday 9am-8pm, Wednesday 9am-8pm, Thursday 9am-6pm, Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-5pm, and Sunday 2pm-5pm.

The second change is in Netlibrary. Netlibrary has been bought by EBSCOhost ebooks. The library has learned that none of our account information was transferred in the switch. This means that the login information you currently have for Netlibrary will no longer work. You will need to come into the library and create a new account with EBSCOhost ebooks. The Reference Department will show you how to get started.

The third change is due to shrinking budgets. The library has opted to drop our subscription to the online databases AtoZ the USA and AtoZ Maps. We will reconsider this decision when budgets improve.

The fourth change is a good thing. We got word this week that Camellia Net is now supporting Kindle. The Camellia Net site has instructions to get you started.

Of course one thing that has not changed is the annual October quilt show. It will be here soon. I am always amazed at the variety of quilts that visit each October so don't forget to drop by to see the quilts.

Camellia Net

Thanks to the wonderful support from the Friends of the Library, Decatur Public Library is now part of Camellia Net, Alabama's Digital Library powered by Overdrive Digital Library Reserve. This site allows you to download ebooks, audio books, and music from home at any time of the day or night. All you need to begin is your library card number. Each book title will display whether the file can be downloaded as an MP3, WMA audio, ebook, burn to cd,transfer to ipod, etc. The camellia net site will let you know what programs you will need to download to your computer or device in order to use this service. Decatur Library has joined the Advantage plan so make sure you have logged in with your card number before you begin your search. Logging in with your card number first will allow you to see all the titles that are available to you. Overdrive has compiled a list of devices and what download format each supports. The list can be seen at http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/. At the moment Amazon Kindle is not a supported device but overdrive is working with Amazon to try to make this a possibility.

Favorite Time of the Year

The daylight hours are getting shorter. The nights are getting cooler. There’s a wonderful crispness in the air. The leaves are turning and falling from the trees. Yes, fall is here. Oh how I love the wonderful yellow, orange, red, and brown colors of fall. Even more I love the colors of the annual visitors to the library. Yes it is that time of year again. The quilts are here. Visiting us this year are Cameron’s Fancy, America the Beautiful, Snake River Log Cabin, Oh the Orient, Granny’s “Heavenly Stars”, Very Hungry Caterpillar, Thimbleberries Sampler, Enchanted Autumn, Blue Log Cabin, Sample My Chocolates, Butterflies are Free, and 22 others. Each year I am amazed at the quilts that come for a visit. I look at them and am overwhelmed with thoughts of the talent and time involved in making this wonderful fabric art. It is so amazing to me how the right pattern selection combined with the right fabric selections combined with needle and thread turn into these wonderful colorful displays. Please stop by and visit with them before they must make their return trip home on October 31.

books in series

Have you ever started reading a book only to discover that this is the first in a series or worse maybe the third in a series? I have done this and sometimes find it hard to track down the rest of the series titles in the correct reading order. I have been playing around on the web to find a site that could help with this problem. Today I came across a site through the Nebraska Library Commission called Books in Series. It is really neat. I looked up C.S. Lewis, Robert Jordan, Jan Karon, Gilbert Morris, Isaac Asimov, Sue Grafton, and Beverly Cleary. I found them all. The lists were in a basic format with the series name in bold type followed by the titles in correct order. I am providing the link so you can take a look for yourself. The site also provides links to other web sites such as Fantastic Fiction. Happy Searching.

http://www.nlc.state.ne.us/ref/booksinseries/

Monica Ferris Needlecraft mystery series

I am not sure exactly when I was introduced to this series of books. I just know for me it was a way to combine two of my hobbies -- reading and cross stitch. Of course cross stitch isn't the only needlecraft mentioned in the books. Knitting, crochet, and needlepoint are mentioned frequently. I also like the bonus needlework pattern at the end of every book. I have listed the books in order of publication date. It is best to start with the first one so that you can follow the lives of the main characters as they evolve.

1. Crewel World
2. Framed in Lace
3. At one point I thought for sure it was going to pour rain. Well, rain just makes me think of being home curled up in my comfortable chair with a good book. Of course, then my mind wanders to book titles and authors. What will I pick? There are so many to select from that the saying about so many book so little time is true. While learning the ropes of my new position, I came across a report that lets me see what were the most checked out books in certain areas in 2008. I thought that seeing what others have read will help me pick something different to read. Then I thought that you might also be interested in seeing what others are reading. Today I will list the 10 most checked out fiction books of 2008 at Decatur Public Library. The other breakdowns of mystery, science fiction, and inspirational will come later.

Ten most checked out fiction books of 2008:
1.
